The Amazon can be restored within our lifetime.

The Amazon rainforest is one of the most vital ecosystems on Earth. It harbors over 10% of global biodiversity, stores two billion tons of carbon per year, and plays a key role in regulating the world’s climate. The forest is also home to 400 indigenous tribes that speak 195 known languages and retain a millennia’s worth of traditional knowledge about forest ecology and stewardship.

Tragically, this region has been fighting a losing battle against the threats of climate change, deforestation, illegal gold mining, and land degradation for decades, with dire consequences for the health of all life on Earth. Key species of trees are becoming increasingly endangered; some species are now so rare thier populations have dipped to unsustainable levels.

But there is hope.

“We know the Amazon can be restored,” is the motto of our 1% for the Planet conservation partner, Camino Verde, a grassroots organization located on the Tambopata River in the Peruvian Amazon region of Madre de Dios. Their team works collaboratively with forest communities to plant key Amazonian trees species, protect the regions’ unparalleled biodiversity, and improve livelihoods.

Camino Verde's reforestation center is a pilot site for innovative agroforestry systems and restoration strategies with 25,000 trees planted representing 400 species of trees. They focus on replenishing the most over-exploited trees, planting high quantities of each species to ensure a diverse genetic stock from which to draw seed. Their nurseries produce 20,000 tree seedlings and over a hundred species each year. Additionally, their team protects over 250 acres of primary rainforest.

Your Impact

I’ve been working with Camino Verde since Carta’s beginnings—in fact, it wouldn’t be too dramatic to say that Carta wouldn’t exist if I hadn’t found them. When I first started out as a perfumer, I was concerned about the environmental impact of my art. Essential oils are resource-intensive and many are associated with environmental and social justice issues. But Camino Verde showed me how nature-derived products can replenish ecosystems and strengthen local communities, instead of depleting and exploiting them. After spending a week on their farm to source Moena Alcanfor for my debut perfume, I developed a newfound passion for using my art to help fund their critical work.

For that reason, a portion of every Carta purchase is donated to Camino Verde. By choosing Carta, you’re helping to save one of the most vulnerable and precious ecosystems on our planet. I believe that the Amazon can be restored for future generations by working together.
